The largest city in the Free Marches, the independent city-state of Starkhaven is ruled by the Vael Family and has strong ties to the Chantry in its governance, sitting close to the borders of Antiva. The Vael family were betrayed, but was avenged by Sebastian Vael when he returned to claim the throne after the Mage rebellion in Kirkwall. As he promised to Hawke, he returned to Kirkwall to aid the Templars putting down the Mages and since then, Starkhaven and Kirkwall have been close allies under the Templars watch.

Located between the two harbors Wycome and Ostwick, Hercinia faces to great sea in the east. Like Wycome it is also a place of pirates, of merchants, scoundrels and a lot of criminality, a corrupt place where only the strongest survive.

The free city state Markham is thought to be the birthplace of King Tylus Van Markahm, the first Nevarran King who in the years past stirred nationalistic feelings in the Free Marches, against the growing power of Orlais. It is today however not ruled by his line, but by another and like elsewhere in the Free Marches, they are being closely watched by the Templar order.

A port located at the mouth of the Waking Sea, a place with much resemblance like Ferelden, ruled by a Teyrn. It is a harbor city heavy guarded at all time, protecting the Waking Sea from pirates and other criminals.

The closest free city near the country Nevarra is ruled by an elected Lord Chancellor. They have in years driven trade with the Nevarran people and been in many conflicts concerning them, but they have always remained a free people.

In the north eastern border of the Free Marches, lays the city known as Wycome, upon the Minanter River. It is the last free city that is a harbor for the materials passing out into the sea, a city full of pirates and scoundrels.
