It hadn't gotten through to him when the Warden Commander pardoned him, not the first time. He had needed to hear it thrice before grasping its meaning.
I thought they would hang me for killing templars. But he didn't. If that was the case, he knew the answer to it. Grey Wardens were far too valuable nowadays, far too scarce in Ferelden, to waste in executions. They were past the old days of honor, it seemed to him, and the Wardens would no longer be honourable. They would become respected but false knights, wearing fancy clothes to hide the cost of passion drawn on their skins. Sick skin, thought Darin.
The Warden Commander had, instead of executing him, sent him off to the Free Marches. To search an empty cave. He much preferred a hard journey to death, though.
According to Warden lore, Free Marches had once been full of entrances to the Deep Roads. Most had been sealed in the past, true, but some still remained to defy time, man and the Maker with their existence. Darin was to search the cave thoroughly, leave no stone unturned, and seal it upon making his exit. It would be his first notable deed(after slaying templars) and perhaps serve to make him known to other Wardens. At least it'd be a start. I will be one of the great Grey Wardens. When the time is full. But another voice answered: You know nothing. And so he shook his head, tired, and began to scour the hills for any large caves.
