Gear: As a battle mage, Braith wears scale armour and a helm complete with a visor in combat and uses a lyrium enhanced longsword and shield to channel her magic. When not expecting combat she sets aside the armour and shield in favour of a simple tunic, trousers, and sturdy dark grey travelling cloak - though her sword is never far away. She also keeps a pack stocked with lyrium potions, health potions, poultices, writing implements, and all of the various items necessary for maintaining her armour and weapons with her at all times. If she needs to dress up, she'll just polish her armour really well and wear that.
CHARACTERISTICS
Appearance: Physically, Braith looks little like what one would expect of a mage, with a surprising amount of muscle from training and fighting in armour with a sword and shield and tanned, lightly freckled skin. Otherwise her appearance is painfully average for an elf, being of middle height with moss-green eyes and wavy dark brown hair normally kept in a messy bun.
Personality: Possessed of a dry wit and forthright nature and stubborn to the core, Braith's directness can easily be insulting to those who don't know her. This bothers her very little, however, as people who can't handle simple honesty are not worth her time anyway. To those that appreciate her typically abrasive attitude, however, she can be very pleasant company often seen among the men sharing drinks and ribald stories or taking her meals standing up as she instructs apprentices in combat magic.
HISTORY
The first nine years of Braith's life were unremarkable for a child growing up in the Denerim alienage, trying to be helpful as her parents did their best to keep her from starving. For the most part, being helpful meant looking sweet and pathetic as her parents begged from passing humans in an attempt to bring in more coin, though her more roguish cousins also made a point of teaching her to steal without getting caught. It was as decent a life as an elf could ask for in Ferelden and she was a happy enough child, if perhaps a bit thinner and hungrier than she would have liked.
It was this hunger that had her reaching into a baker's basket as her parents begged on the street corner when she was nine years old. Still a small child, she hadn't been careful enough when checking if anyone could see and the baker's wife caught her in the act. An elf, in her husbands goods! The woman knew their business would be ruined and flew into a rage, screeching for the guards to teach the little thief a lesson. Terror unlocked Braith's previously dormant magical powers, dust and pebbles rising into the air around her as she stumbled back from the baker's wife.
Within moments templars were called from the Chantry nearby, taking Braith away from her family and home as her parents pleaded with them to let her go. Frightened and alone, heartbroken over the loss of her home and family, Braith cried bitterly for most of her stay in the Chantry before her transport to Kinloch Hold was arranged. Fortunately, though, one of the templars was very kind to her and she quickly developed a fascination with his weapons and armour. Declaring that she was going to be a knight just like him when she grew up, she was content to be sent to the Circle Tower for training.
Her contentedness didn't last long, however, and was soon replaced with bitterness and resentment as she learned that kindness from the Chantry was so rare as to be nearly unique. She was no longer permitted to run and play or to see her family or practice picking locks like her cousins taught her, and her dream of being a knight was quickly crushed. Mages wore robes, colour-coded so everyone knew their rank, identical in every way, and even looking at a blade was often cause to be accused of blood magic.
That did not stop her from studying swordplay from books in private, however, using heavy planks from the stockroom burned into a shape she could fit in her hand as practice swords and shields. She even made a point of studying the templars as they trained, mimicking their movements whenever she was alone, and while it was difficult when she was an apprentice it grew easier after her Harrowing. With her own semi-private chambers she had a great deal more time to practice unseen so that over the course of the next several years she even managed to combine her magic and swordsmanship.
When Uldred overran the Circle with abominations and maleficarum Braith, now a mage of twenty six, seized the opportunity to steal some of the weapons she'd so long admired and put them to the test in real combat. Much to her disgust her attempts were met with only moderate success at best, and the templar armour was far too heavy for her to even attempt to fight in. Lucky to escape the mess Uldred made of the Tower made with her life, Braith still refused to give up on learning to be a proper battlemage. Though, admittedly, it was more out of pure stubbornness than any actual hope of success.
The Hero of Ferelden, however, a man whose surname she remembered vaguely from history lessons she'd always mostly ignored, asked the mages for aid in the Blight, offering Braith a fresh opportunity for real practice in her favoured craft. Jumping at the chance to leave the Tower and put herself in the thick of combat, she was among the first to join the fight against the darkspawn. Not long after that she'd stolen a new sword, shield, and even a full set of scale armour from a tragically small human soldier. Over the next year she honed her skills in the heat of battle, at first saved only by the presence of allies until by the end of the Blight she was as proficient with a blade as any other.
One benefit she hadn't thought of, however, was that she now no longer looked like a mage. Having traded her robes for armour and her staff for a sword and shield, as long as she refrained from using magic templars passed her by. Without even realizing it, she had spent most of her life ensuring that she could live free again and she fully intended to pass her knowledge on to others.
Over the next ten years she continued to improve her skill not only with her sword and shield, but also combining them with her magic. Working as a mercenary earned her enough money to buy her a sword and shield enhanced with lyrium to channel her power properly, as a staff would, and better quality armour – though she always kept to scale mail, rather than splint or chain, her first discovery of mid-size armour remaining her preference.
When the Mage-Templar war erupted and Braith learned of the gathering mages at Andoral's Reach, she saw the chance she'd been looking for to share her hard won knowledge. She certainly wasn't the only real battle mage in Thedas, but they were even rarer than kind templars sympathetic to mages. Her unique skills and experience coupled with a keen mind for tactics had her rising quickly through the ranks of the rebel mages to a high standing among the more scholarly senior enchanters.
