CHARACTERISTICS
Appearance: Denny stands at 5’8” with a somewhat thin frame. He carries a lean layer of muscles, due to the many years of honing his skills as a rogue. His skin is naturally pale, and tends to fight against changing colors in the sun. While years of running around the Alienage have improved how strong his skin is against the sun - he still will burn, unless he’s careful or covers his skin.
His eyes shine a bright hazel under his black curly hair. Every attempt to calm his messy poof of hair, has only ended with it somehow seeming bigger and angrier. And slightly man-hungry.
Basically he’s identical to his twin, though his ears are un-pierced.
Personality: Denny is an extremely odd combination of...everything. When he’s around people who demand respect in some shape or another, he’s extremely polite. Even though he dislikes his social standing within the world - he understand his place as a city elf. When he wants to avoid conflict, he won’t make eye-contact with humans who feel they are over him. When angry or protecting Kenny, however, he’s prone to being far less cautious. Of the two, he’s the ‘logical’ one - always trying to avoid conflict and keep his apostate brother safe.
When there’s no life threatening danger, however, he’s a hyperactive ball of energy that seeks entertainment out of the little things, and is quite easily amused. However, this energy has wavered a bit since the ‘incident’ back in Denerim. He’s now a bit more focused on the safety of Kenny - since there’s a very large change that he’s the only family left of Denny’s.
Around the opposite sex, Denny gets...awkward. He becomes as charming as a nug with the stomach flu, and normally ends up saying something slightly insulting or nonsensical.
When on his own, however, he’s an extremely drawn-in person. He gets a bit lost in ideas and random thoughts that dance around his head - which often get translated to paper in either art or writing.
His view on humans is varied, to say the least. He has a deep seated hatred over those ‘shem’ who hold themselves above the elves - yet has no problem for those who see him as an equal.
Overall, Denny is the logical twin who both wants to have fun - yet find a bigger meaning in life.
HISTORY
Within Denerim, the Hao family once lived. The father - Renato - was a market worker who hid his magical abilities, to avoid being pulled into the Circle and away from his family. His wife, Laylee, was a book writer, who also took care of their three children: Kenneth, Denneth, and Asher.
The three children grew up as well as any child in the Alienage could. There was plenty of running, screaming discovering the tasty properties of mud, as well as chasing each other. However, at the age of nine, Denneth’s twin brother - Kenneth, started showing slight magical abilities. While Ranato quickly began teaching Kenneth magic, Denneth looked on in idle curiosity. It was the first time that they weren’t tied for something. They looked the same, sounded the same - were the same height and weight. But this? Denny wasn’t able to use magic, like his brother. This both made him a bit jealous - as well as fearful for his brother. Being one with magic - like their father - meant that a demon could take him, if he wasn’t careful.
Thanks to the ever-rising crime rate within the Alienage, Denny and Asher were given daggers by their mother, with light instruction on how to use them. She feared he wouldn’t be able to defend himself, like Kenny could with his magic. While the young elf took quickly to the small blade, Asher struggled with its small size.
As Kenny received training from their father, Denny took to wandering around the Alienage with Asher. He kept finding random abandoned buildings within the Alienage that were locked. Being as curious as he was, he began toying with the locks. While Asher attempted to persuade him to stop - the hyperactive child refused. It was a new challenge for him to have fun with. It took Denny quite awhile to figure out the secret on how to lock-pick. If he hadn’t found a broken lock behind their small house, he probably wouldn’t have ever learned to pry open locks.
As the years passed, the three children slowly honed their skills while attempting to live a full life in the Alienage. But it was difficult. From the other children and a few books he had read, Denneth had heard about the Dalish elves. They didn’t have to live in the mud and shabby huts. They were free and were living out what was left of the elven race. Plus their face tattoos looked really neat.
Not wanting to upset his family, Denneth kept the slight yearning to leave, tucked away. It wasn’t going to happen, so why dream?
A few days after he and Kenny turned fifteen, however, the Maker - or whoever/whatever controlled it all, decided to play out a series of events that changed...everything.
Kenny was out at a party with a few friends. Denny hadn’t been feeling his best, so he decided to stay home. Their parents had decided to go out on a late-night walk together - as they often did.
Asher and Denny played cards. Thanks to Denny not feeling well, they had decided to just do simple things for entertainment.
The door opened - causing both children to look up and smile at their parents.
A few men appeared behind them, before the door could close. Denny quickly stood, causing his stomach to churn from his slight illness. Ignoring the discomfort, he reached for his daggers - only to find air.
They were next to his bed.
Then...Denny can’t remember what happened next. Just sounds. A scream. A cry. His name. Asher’s name.
Then Kenneth’s voice - asking if he was okay and what happened. That’s when he saw his parents...dead. Asher was nowhere to be seen. With a frown he pulled himself together, feeling aches throughout his entire body.
The twins gathered what gold their parents had, and all usefull possession they would need.
Their life in the Alienage was now over.
