Deep in the heart of Sharokovar Thaig in the lost and ruined expanse of the Deep Roads lies the city of Kal Sharok. The lost dwarven city still bears a grudge against Orzammar for abandoning the Thaigs to the darkspawn, and over the centuries Kal Sharok culture has split away from dwarven tradition. In order to survive they have taken radical steps, leaving their culture strange and unsettling to outsiders - a view which has compounded the dwarves' reclusiveness. The least of these steps was dissolving the castes. Now there are four classes - farmers, miners, craftsmen, and warrior - which any dwarf may choose to join. Each of these classes is responsible for a vital part of life in Kal Sharok, and is governed by a small council elected by the men and women working beneath them, who in turn elect a member to represent their interests as members of the Assembly. In addition to these four, there are five permanent members of the Assembly, each representing one of the major houses. House Azagale currently boasts the High Lord and Lady, and is strongly supported by Assembly Houses Nevvin, Strakan, and Dunnharg. House Tranador poses the only significant opposition, but possesses a strong voice in the Assembly.
