CHARACTERISTICS
Appearance: Honovi is average height with an athletic build, thick hair that is nearly black, and eyes of the same colour. Her complexion is dark, like most Chasind, and her features could be considered pretty, if somewhat weathered and harsh. She wears feathers in her hair and a string of bear claws around her neck, which combine with her usually serious expression to give her a hard and savage appearance. She also has a vicious scar running from the back of her knee to her groin, which stands out amongst her other various scars. Her armour is plain but well made, and she wears her quiver on her hip with her bow and daggers on her back.
Personality: Honovi is very quiet, but not because she is shy – she simply does not speak when she has nothing to say. When she does have something she says it simply and completely. She is alert and attentive, and though mostly uneducated is surprisingly intelligent. She is also very proud, and dignified, rarely showing any emotion she doesn't choose to. Because of this, she could easily be seen as cold, and her directness makes her abrasive - the two combining to make her a difficult friend to make. Once she is a friend, however, she is intensely loyal and protective.
Because of certain events during the Blight, she has less than no use for religion of any sort and tends to view the world with cynicism and, occasionally, nihilism. After the loss of her tribe, she is also compulsively protective and feels an almost manic hatred of darkspawn. It has also driven her to hold on to anything that reminds her of her lost loved ones, and despite her usual practicality can't force herself to let these things go.
HISTORY
Her mother having died in childbirth and her father having been a shaman taken by templars, Honovi was raised by her grandfather, who trained her as a hunter alongside an orphaned boy named Honaw. She did this gladly, for she loved the hunt and worshiped Honaw, and when she came of age her grandfather gifted her with his father's bow and a hawk's egg. She kept the egg carefully tucked in her shirt until it hatched, naming the eyas Ahote. She raised it and trained it to help her on the hunt, flushing smaller prey from the bushes and helping to herd larger game to better positions for her to make a good shot.
Her life was happy and simple, and her tribe tolerated the missionaries that came to them alone to preach the Chant of Light, though her people never accepted the northern religion. It was from one of these missionaries that she and Honaw learned to read, and over time they became fast friends with the man. When he eventually left, he gave Honaw a map of Thedas and Honovi the book of poetry he had taught them with with. She treasured this gift, reading it over and over until she had each poem memorized. In return, they gave him an amulet of carved river-stone and polished bone so that all Chasind would know he was a brother and do him no harm.
Before he left, Honovi asked him to act as her guardian alongside her grandfather at her wedding to Honaw. Though most of the tribe was stunned, when her husband-to-be agreed they allowed it and he stood behind her as Honaw placed his love-gift – a necklace of bear claws – around her neck.
Their marriage was a happy one, filled with a great deal of love and respect, and Honovi and Honaw were always extremely protective of one another. But as two of the tribe's best hunters, when the Blight came it was their duty to defend their people from the darkspawn.
With their tribe living near the heart of the Korcari Wilds, they were quickly overwhelmed by darkspawn and most of the tribe was killed. Niether Honovi's grandfather nor Honaw survived the struggle to escape north. Honovi herself was blinded by grief and took a severe wound to her leg, forcing the other survivors to continue on without her or risk being caught by darkspawn. Ahote, however, refused to leave her. She sent the hawk to catch rabbits and smaller birds for her to eat, and with his help she managed to scavenge enough bandages and poultices to reach aid before her wound could kill her.
She spent the rest of the blight hunting darkspawn, driven by grief and revenge. By the time the archdemon was killed, though, she had nothing left but Ahote, and when he eventually died she fell into a deep depression until she came across an abandoned hawk's nest. As she had done with Ahote's egg, she carried the abandoned eggs under her shirt next to her skin, until eventually one of them hatched. After another day had passed without the other eggs hatching, Honovi gave them up for dead and left them in the forest, naming the living eyas Makwa and training him as he grew.
She now travels obsessively, trying to outrun the ghosts of her people and her past, even now suffering from nightmares that wake her in the night.
