APPLICATION
The pitch black of darkness covered the distant lands within its eerie night as the evening drew on. Weisshaupt Fortress stood tall and proud as its mighty walls surrendered themselves to the ever lasting shadows of the night, torches were light at different sections of the castle. Their soothing but powerful heat and light of the flames sliced threw the darkness like a sharp knife cutting some freshly baked bread; freezing winds blew with great agility and dexterity across the mighty fortress. Its chilly embraced mixed itself into the shadowy darkness of night. Beyond the protection of the courageous stone walls, standing high on top of a lookout, an well-armoured woman stood silently like a hawk as she gazed out into the distance.
She embraced the cold night but did not move an inch as her eyes slowly gazed northwards over towards the distance. Thoughts lingered into her head, as everything was peaceful tonight. But she knew that the life of a Grey Warden was filled with never ending battle, war and determination. Somewhere out there was Aleric, the man who she calls her father and it was only a matter of time before her plan would come to fruition, Without saying a word Anna turned towards the fortress and looked at several of her fellow wardens who quietly patrolled the battlements. One of them marched over towards her and said “First Warden Commander may I speak freely?” The voice was that of a man in his early twenties, who was also dressed in armour, Anna turned herself around to speak with the young man and replied in a calm manner “Speak your mind, tell me what’s troubling you?”. Anna said as she stood wondering what the young man had to talk about.
Her eyes noticed that the man’s were filled with doubt, while his expression was filled with anxiety. The fellow Grey Warden sighed, which came from his own heart and soul. “Thank you First Warden, I am starting to feel uneasy. I mean first there is the Darkspawn, then our name is tarnished. And now First Warden Aleric is held captive”. The young man lowered his head in sadness, but found a hand was on his shoulder. He looked up seeing Anna there with a tiny grin. She could understand his doubt and simply spoke in a gentle way, after all the Grey Wardens were her family and her younger brother just needed a confidence boost. “Take heart my friend, it is only natural to feel this way. But a good soldier remains calm and focused even in the darkest of times. There was something that my Aleric once taught me, he told that courage above all things is the heart of a warrior”.
The Grey Warden smiled slightly but Anna simply continued “All we can do is move forward, and face any challenge that face us. And together we will restore our lost honour to the Grey Wardens, You have my word! Now it’s getting late so you better turn in for the night. You will need your strength for tomorrow” With renewed confidence the man saluted in utter respect, and slowly headed back to the fortress, with a nod she slowly turned back to look northwards as the moon shown its light over the lands.
