CHARACTERISTICS
Appearance: Ruby doesn't look like your everyday wallflower, and that's the way she wants it. A lot of her personality is expressed through her appearance, and those who see her, get a pretty good idea from the start. It starts with her very short blonde hair. While she has a pretty face, don't let it distract you because you might wind up dead. Ruby has pale blueish-grey eyes, a slim nose, and full pale lips. All accompanied with a fair colored skin. She has a fit body with a fair amount of muscle, though not too much. And she is quite tall, standing at 6 feet.
Tats. Tattoos and piercings. These two things take up a lot of her appearance as well. Much of her body is covered in tattoos, with both of her arms covered along with much of her back. Both of her ears are covered in many piercings, as well as a chain piercing that sometimes stretches across half of her face. It is more or less, considered a symbol for her.
Personality:
Over-Confidence: It could be considered both one of her strengths and weaknesses. No matter what the predicament is or who the person is, she is always sure to succeed. Of course, this is not always a good thing. It can cloud her judgement and hinder her ability to think logically. Many have called her a fool for such behavior, with it leading her to act foolishly, but it's never stopped her. She shoves all the hatred away, and goes about her merry way.
Wrathful: She isn't killing every person she sees, but she's not afraid to kill a person either. She might be considered a bit heartless when it comes to mercy. It's hard for her see such a thing in a person when they wrong her in any way.
Sadistic: One could say this would fall under the last category. She is sadistic in the way that she has a dark sense of humor. She gets pleasure out of others' pain and suffering. It's all a big game to her, for her entertainment.
Sarcastic: Like her sadistic personality disorder, she loves playing games with people, and getting a laugh in some of the most cruel ways. She's always quick with a witty comeback that has a hint of humor in it. Sometimes it can really mess with the person's head and sometimes just give them a good laugh. Either way, she can turn a serious situation into a humorous one with one line, whether it's "too soon" or "not the right time". One could say that she doesn't have a serious bone in her body.
Hard to trust others: You'd better spend some time trying to prove to her that you can be trusted because otherwise, she won't. After some events in her past, it has changed her outlook on society. Before you start asking her for favors, you'd better do something for her first. And if your name isn't Marionette or you're not one of her fellow assassins, I'd suggest you'd be on your way.
Honest: Maybe too honest. If there's something on her mind, she won't be afraid to say it. Even if it is rude. 'Rude' isn't in her vocabulary, so I wouldn't think twice about it. Just don't be surprised if you ask her a personal question, and her answer sends you into an angry frenzy. If you didn't want the truth, you shouldn't have asked. But you shouldn't worry because most of the time a question isn't required for her to speak her mind.
HISTORY
Ruby before the incident
Life along the Volca Sea is calm. Laysh is a small, quiet, peaceful little town. Out of the way of the rest of the world. The nearest largest city is days away. Safe from the Qunari take-over, the Blight, the tyrancy of nobility and royalty wars. Most people that live there believe they live in the best place in Thedas. And 27 years ago, on a windy autumn day, amongst the reddened and yellowed trees, our Rudy Adler was born in this town.
Jacob and Paulina Adler thought their lives couldn't get better. They lived the best city and were now starting a family of their own. 4 years later, that all changed.
Paulina was out at the market, gathering food and supplies for her husband and daughter. That was when two Templars approached her and grabbed her hands. Shouting at her, telling her not to resist and that she was going to be taken away. That her magic could no longer be hidden and they knew who she was. How did they know? There were only three people who knew that she was a mage: her husband, her daughter, and her neighbor, Sabine. Sabine... she had betrayed her. She squealed in fear and now Paulina was paying the price, but she couldn't let them take her. Not without a fight.
What came next is engraved in Ruby's mind. Despite her being so young, she still remembers as clear as day. Her mother tore a knife out from her pocket and slit it across her palm. Blood went everywhere, in the air and around the two Templars. Like a monster devouring its meal. There was so much blood, it was hard to believe it came from all one person. It didn't end there. More and more blood kept coming, and her father kept singing to her to keep Rudy's eyes off the sight. By the time the Templars fell dead, so had Paulina. She had used so much blood and energy, that it was impossible to save her. Within minutes she was dead.
Ruby didn't understand. She was too young. What had her mother done and why? Why would she kill herself? Did she not care? Her father spent hours trying to talk to her about that day, but it just confused her more. What was even worse is that the rest of the town practically shunned the two. They refused to talk to them, and looked at them as if they had killed the Templars themselves. And when Ruby started to show signs of magic, "her mother's gift", Jacob knew they had to leave.
They traveled as far South as they could until the reached the mountains: the Hunterhorn Mountains. It was a nice secluded place for the two to stay, at least for a while. They found a small abandoned cabin next to a lake along the North edge of the mountain pass, and to the South was the forest. Perfect for hunting. Almost immediately, Jacob put a dagger in Rudy's hand and taught her how to use it. He was so fearful of her magic abilities, that he needed to find a way for her to use another form of protection. He figured if he taught her to use a blade instead, she'd be at less of a risk against Templars.
She took to the skill quickly, but with much practice. One blade eventually turned into two. And in the process, as she grew, Rudy was able to learn how to control her magic in the process. Two blades turned into three, and she was slowly becoming a master like her father. She spent days, weeks, and months practicing both of her talents: magic and dual-weapon. Her father did what he could, he even hired a background mage tutor for her. An old friend he'd been close to for years; a friend of Paulina. He was able to seek him out and offer up his abilities. Which he did. And within a year or two, he taught Rudy everything she needed to know about mastering and controlling her power.
Her main weapon of choice was always a dagger, however, and her fist. When she was 13 years old, they had finally moved to a small village just South outside the mountain pass, but their stay didn't last long. Within a week, Rudy got into a fight with another girl over a peach. The girl tried to steal the peach from Rudy, in which a fight ensued between the two. Rudy slammed the girl to the ground, and her fist making impact on the girl's eye, sending a river of blood from the socket. Rudy grabbed the peach and ran home. Jacob made her return the peach in person, and apologize to both the girl and her parents. Afterwards he punished her by forcing them to move away to the Hills, south of the village. He tried shoving her down her throat how she couldn't act that way. She couldn't fix her problems by simple throwing punches, and that sometimes it was best to let it go.
And she took it to heart.
The rest of her adolescence was uneventful until she was 19. Her father had fallen to an unknown illness that no healer or doctor could fix. The treatments only seemed to make it worse. After 4 months, he passed away, and Rudy was left alone. She ran into obscurity in the hills for the next year, emerging from the Hills a different woman. She decided to make a new life in Andorals Reach. Starting a job as a barmaid at the tavern and meeting a man in return.
He was a beautiful man. Long dark hair, bright blue eyes, tan skin, and muscle. His name was Viktor and he had an accent of a God. She fell for him immediately, and let her move into his place to stay. At first, it was perfect, and then like everything else in her life, it went sour. He began to change. He was no longer the same man she met in the Tavern. He became controlling, obsessive, and abusive. She quit her job under his command because he didn't like her being around other men. Everytime she went to the marketplace for goods, he accused her of cheating and thus began his beatings. There wasn't a day that went by that she didn't have bruises.
But it didn't stop there. As the days went by, all her rights as a person were taken away. She was just an object, for sex, anger, punishment, and power. And it lasted for 3 long grueling years, until her dreams were answered.
Her dreams were answered in the form of a young beautiful blonde woman. She saved her from the wretched life under Viktor's control, killed him with his blood on her face. She embraced the girl for hours, sobbing tears of sadness and happiness. And with those tears running down her face, she chopped her hair off and gave herself a new name: Ruby. And Ruby vowed to never love another man again. Her love and her life was devoted to the woman who freed her from shackles.
This was the start of the beginning of her life. They traveled and traveled together in the wilderness. They eventually happened across a cave where the veil was said to be very thin, and what she found inside astonished her. She met a demon, and with this demon, came an extraordinary unstoppable power that he granted Ruby. The power of blood.
Now she understood why her mother did what she did that day.
