I do think he’s going too far. Sparing her life and giving her sanctuary I can see the sense of; even approve of, to an extent.

Giving her an estate, on the other hand...

If it were just an empty building to live in, very well, but no! She has a few retainers who escaped with her, of course, but we still must provide additional staff, and supplies and furnishings and protection for everyone in the manor, not just her. Surely it would be more prudent to put her in a small house, with a couple of maidservants, and otherwise let her fend for herself? It would be a better camouflage for her; who would think to search for the Empress of Orlais in a peasant’s house?

Besides, a bit of hard work would probably serve her better than ten years of luxury and the schemes of an Orlesian court.

If I am truly honest with myself, I do worry about Alistair’s... eagerness to see she is cared for. I am not as fond of him as I was of Cailan – how could I be, considering the circumstances? – but he is my husband, and has been for nearly a decade. So many years of marriage do engender a kind of caring, and loyalty... or so one would think.

I did despise the rumours that circulated about Cailan and Celene; I still do. Yet to have those same rumours spring up between that pampered, painted harpy and my second husband as well... It is enough to anger any woman, is it not? And that is all I am, truly. Sometimes I think people forget that. Sometimes I think I do.
