CHARACTERISTICS
Appearance: Meredy is how most elven children should look but given her upbringing, her appearance is rather noble. Standing at 3ft 4in, her body and appearance is fairly healthy and appears to be fragile. With fair pale skin, long blond hair with a straight cut fringe, and wide curious light blue eyes, Meredy is often mistaken for a porcelain doll. Unfortunately Meredy is blind so her eyes do appear dim and without irises - indicating the obvious. She takes great care in dressing herself, often wearing various bows and cute dresses, though her main attire now consists of something more simpler to avoid attention. Due to the mistreatment of her kind, Meredy likes to wear ribbons on both sides of her hair to hide her small elven ears in hopes that she does not receive the same mistreatment.
Personality: Like many children, Meredy's mind is filled with imagination, although a peculiar girl she is still a child at heart. She has an odd way of talking, often speaking in riddle and rhyme, which can confuse even adults. Despite that she is mature for her age; being able to make decisions for herself, knowing friend from foe, and being sure not to speak with strangers, she is still like any other child that cries when they've fallen and scraped their knee.
She tries to be brave but is easily scared, almost always using her plush halla toy to communicate with anyone by hiding her face behind it and using 'ventriloquism', her behavior may seem shy but she is quite wary. As a child, Meredy is unaware of the many dangers that surround her, her blissful ignorance and innocence prevents her from thinking that a wild animal is bound to attack her if she gets too close, she is even unaware that she herself can be a danger to both others and herself.
She takes interest in things that many others would find unnatural such as ghosts, mythical creatures and legends. When certain events or people upset or scare her, she tends to imagine that she is somewhere nice or hides away from people in dark confined spaces. Meredy has a peculiar like for the Qunari ("Qunari" is also one of her favourite words to say) and hopes to meet one in person one day, though she feels more comfortable around Elves but hasn't much negative opinion on humans.
Meredy is still young so she has not developed much of an opinion on most topics or people, but knows that she must stay away from Templars at all costs.
HISTORY
"If a person is born, yet there is no one there to see... does that make them real? Are they apart of The Fade or Reality?"
- Meredy.
Before the age of six, Meredy doesn't remember anything of her life. She was rescued from slavers by a Fereldan apostate Mage named William Phaedra and taken in from there, giving her the name 'Meredy'. She lived her life in a shack in The Wilds with him for a short time before William soon feared for young Meredy's safety and sought to seek her out a family that would raise her as their own.
However, he was shocked to discover that she was soon beginning to show signs of being a Mage, William's fear increased over time as he now had the Templars to worry about, she was only a child, an Elven child at that with the disadvantage of being blind, knowing that his own life had been unbearable during his time in the Circle before he escaped, he didn't want her to go through the same. Meredy lived in The Wilds for five months with no friends and only the odd bird or two for company, as time went by William began to see her as a daughter and later gave her a handmade Halla toy which she named Era, but sadly knew he would only increase her chances of being taken to the Circle if she stayed with him.
As difficult as it was, he taught her the basics of magic and at the age of seven she was able to use her very first spell but due to her age, she has not mastered it. Due to the dangers of The Wilds, William began to travel to a safer place where he and Meredy could live for a while and managed to board a ship to Orlais, knowing she'd not be forced to be a slave, he had considered The Tevinter Imperium, but she still was only a child, it would've been less likely that she would survive there. For only a week the two stayed in an abandoned house before the Templars soon caught up with them, suspecting Mages to be living in the house. It was a dark and rainy night during that unfortunate moment, William had no choice but to take Meredy and flee, he came across an estate where a widowed nobleman lived.
"Please, take this child, give her a good life! Don't let the Templars take her away! She deserves happiness as much as anyone else, she's very special, messere. Do not judge her for who or what she is, I beg you! She knows very little of the dangers around her, so please, educate her well! Take care of my dear Meredy!"
Those were the very last words Meredy heard from William before she was entrusted into the arms of the elderly man and he soon fled. Fortunately for her, the elderly man was a kind hearted human who had lost his wife while they were still young and happy, his wife was an Elf and he adored the beings with such passion, often writing about them and painting them in his memoirs. The man was an Orlesian artist named Louvel Von Notre, a man whose artistry which was respected and admired by many, though sadly he was a lonely man without children and with only servants for company. He took young Meredy in, noting that she was a Mage due to William's words, word on the street soon came about that an apostate Mage had been killed and refrained from telling the child the sad news, but in Meredy's blind eyes, he could see from the sadness that she knew so already.
Knowing very little of magic and the like, he began to purchase and search his own libraries for books and tomes on magic some of which he purchased from merchants, helping Meredy the best he could all whilst educating her on other topics such as Literacy and History, even sometimes Art. He fed her well, bathed and dressed her until soon she began to manage on her own, the more she adapted to her surroundings the easier it became for her to move around freely like any other person. Though one day, a painting of hers caught Louvel's attention, doing some research he understood it to be the Fade and asked her if this is what she dreamed about, Meredy merely shook her head and told him that this was what she saw.
"What you see?"
"Yes, even though I do not see your presence, I can indeed... see your essence."
"My essence, Meredy dear?"
"Mhm... your essence is calm and bright, it is comforting... like a light."
Her words intrigued him and then he remembered, William had said she was special, could this possibly be it? Although it was certain that Meredy could not see, but perhaps her being a Mage gave her some sort of gift of sight? For days, Louvel researched and studied, eventually coming to the conclusion that even though Meredy was blind, in the darkness that she saw every day she could still see others, but not for what they looked like, almost as if she could see their souls or spirits. He spoke to his adopted daughter further on the subject.
"Is it like seeing ghosts, child? Seeing the spirits of those who have parted?"
"A little... I see you but I cannot see faces and I cannot see places."
"What do you see, Meredy? Can you see my form? Like a silhouette?"
"Yes! But... you have colour, you are red... the colour of passion, so it is said."
"I have a colour? Do you see me as a spirit in the Fade? Is it like that?"
"Yes... it is like you are a spirit, it is difficult to understand and I'm sorry that I cannot explain it..."
Peculiar indeed, Louvel sought out more knowledge on the matter, but refrained from contacting any Mages in case of Meredy being discovered by Templars, and luckily his servants were both faithful and.loyal. Meredy may be a child, but he did not once think that this was just her imagination, it didn't seem like much of a serious matter, this gift of hers didn't seem to cause her any injury or harm, except that she would tell him her eyes would hurt from seeing so many different and bright colours and would get her to rest when this happened.
He would study and read every book he could find on the Fade in hopes to understand more of Meredy's ability, coming up with many ideas and conclusions, but all just seemed too unbelievable, even for him. Perhaps there was some truth and fact in all of his ideas and theories. Could this truly be a gift? Or maybe this is what life was like for all Mages with an eyesight impairment? Then again, he had met a blind Mage once before, a Tranquil at that. Or was it that she was sensitive to the Fade? Louvel just couldn't decide which one was the case.
Though on one unfortunate night, when Meredy was eight years of age, Louvel had passed away from old age, the fatigue of searching for answers on Meredy's ability caused his body to become weary and fragile. The light that she always saw seemed to go out as soon as he died. Unable to bare the sadness and grief of losing the closest thing she had to a father, Meredy ran away.
