CHARACTERISTICS
Appearance: Zephyrus might not be what one would expect of a Tevinter Magister. Messy, dirty blonde hair, short and in hardly any formation. His facial hair can go untamed for days and has quite a laid back appearance. Due to his intense experimentation Zephyrus' looks can vary. Over the years he has grown rather pallid, some say he even looks gaunt at times, but then the next day he's of exellent physical health. Even on his best days the dark circles under his eyes never truly fade.
Although he doesn't have the dashing looks of his youth but Zephyrus certainly has an exotic charm about him that most people find appealing. He's got a very suave voice that's quite pleasant and a relaxed stance that puts people at ease around him. A very notable feature of his is his deep blue eyes. Zephyrus has had a high exposure to the Fade which shows when you look into his inhumanly blue eyes. Zephyrus doesn't pay close attention to what is en vogue but adjusts his outfits according to fashion to some degree when he deems it necessary. His colors of choice are black and purple with some minor touches of green here and there. He hardly looks modest but not over the top either, his style is elegant yet effortless.
Personality: A true suave, Zephyrus is normally witty, clever and a very charming man. Although he constatly holds back information and twists words, this gives him a sort of shadyness that causes people to distrust him. Revealing his plans is practially suicide in his mind. As a politician he is very accomplished, having no shortage of charisma nor intelligence. He's a master of lies and cunning as a fox. The Magister can be very controlling and manipulative, he has no qualms about killing and is not above using deceit. He's a pragmatic at heart, Zephyrus is objective and has no religion and little moral values. If he has a goal, then he'll fulfill it. It's hard for him to pull himself out of his plans, and harder still to drop the attitude of someone with the personal respect of the Archon. Seeing as he's been getting an ever expanding horde of enemies Zephyrus has grown a bit paranoid, not trusting anyone as far as he can throw them.
Zephyrus is a mage with a real thirst to delve into the unknown. He fixates on things, obsesses over particularities and will not stop until he is sated. He remains calm and in control at all times but that's not to say there isn't steel and fire in him. Zephyrus can be extremely vindictive and vengeful. He doesn't forgive and forget, he more: retaliate and destroy. He doesn't get mad, he just get's even. He does feel some measure loyalty to both his homeland and monarch, after all he's been traveling to the far ends of Thedas for both their sakes, but in the end of the day he's out for himself above all. An ambitious social climber, Zephyrus has and will do whatever, whether that be stealing, killing or betrayal to reach the top of the mountain. Knowing that these things take time, he has well learned that patience is a virtue and will wait long periods of time until the moment is just right to fulfill his plans and is generally annoyed by people not ready to do whatever it takes to reach the top. Maybe a little intimidated even seeing as he doesn't quite know how to deal with those people.
HISTORY
The Tarquinus family curse is a well known story in Vyrantium that features a long lineage of extremely powerful mages turning insane before having the chance to truly become great. There are many stories of how this curse came to be, some said an Avvar shaman cast the curse on one of their ancestors for defiling his daughter while others claim a Tarquinus angered an elven mage during the days of Arlathan and she cast the curse. Regardless of it's origin, the curse is a very real thing to most members of the family. While Zephyrus himself would never admit it, he's terrified of falling vicitim to it. Zephyrus Arcadius Tarquinus, as he was known as back then, was the bastard child of Hypatia Attica and Flavius Tarquinus. Flavius was the disowned son of Magister Antaeus. While his father never fell victim to this curse, Flavius most certainly did. After a year of public humiliation, Antaeus finally dismissed his son. Zephyrus' mother on the other hand was a daughter from the respected and powerful Atticus family and Flavius' older brother Arcadius' betrothed at that. Before Flavius took the chance to disappear into the night never to be seen again he managed to impregnate his lover which created some problems. Ashamed, the family litterly had to sell their daughter to get Arcadius to marry her.
Arcadius was just as his father a very powerful mage and old bachelor who wasn't interested in women at all, but this was a chance to raise his family's status which wasn't something he was about to pass up. He was paid to give Zephyrus his surname but not to be his father, so the boy didn't grow up in ignorance. He learned rather early on of his backround with all it's glory. Arcadius often called him "it", most often just forgetting his existance altogether. Hypatia couldn't and wouldn't take care of her son as she was busy finding solace in the arms of countless lovers. Zephyrus was basically solely raised by a series of nanies and tutors. As the years progressed Arcadius' mental health began to fail him, growing all the more depressed and paranoid by each passing day. He suddenly started seeing enemies everywhere, slowly starting to see a plot against him, spearheaded by his estranged wife. One day he took it over the edge, killing his wife and thereby ending the so called conspiracy against him. The Tarquinus family curse at work.
The truth behind the Magister's insanity was soon brought to light, by Zephyrus in fact, which resulted in him quickly being an insane asylum. Antaeus was heartbroken to find out that yet another family member had fallen victim to the curse which eventually led to his suicide. With his grandfather dead Zephyrus was not only the only sane Tarquinus left, but also at the mere age twelve, the boy had become the head of his house. He was also completely alone. His estates would be taken care of by the family's slaves and his uncle's right hand man until he came of age. For as long as he was still a child however, Zephyrus was raised by the Black Chantry. He didn't spend a lot of time there to be honest. The boy had already joined the Imperial Circle and was very busy studing the magical arts. In his earlier years he would have trouble sleeping because of the visions and voices in his head. This was originally thought to have something to do with the family curse but it was soon revealed that the boy simply had a aptitude to spirit magic. He studied hard, and exelled. His fixation on his studies, the praise it earned, turned him into something of an overachiever. Even delving into the forbidden blood magic.
It was an arrogant boy that eventually reclaimed his birthright. He became known as a low level Magister with a cocky attitude at first but Zephyrus soon proved himself an adversary to be feared. He actually found that being underestimated for his youth was one of his greatest assets. This quickly brought him to the attention of the Archon. One day he sent him on a mission to retrivive some ancient Tevinter artifacts that had been stolen by the Qunari. He, of course, accepted and was assigned to some troops who would escort him to these artifacts, that's when the enemy attacked. A huge chunk of their forces were killed along with the Legate leading them. Weakened and trapped behind enemy lines, Zephyrus took command of the remaining forces. Splitting up his troops he started a guerilla type warfare, slowly convincing the enemy that the Tevinter forces were far greater than they actually were. Believing their settlements to be in danger, the Qunari started pulling back their forces allowing the Tevinters to escape with the artifacts. Upon his arrival home, Zephyrus was greeted with cheers. On the night of his return the Archon rewarded him with the rank of senator, giving him the name Dercylidas after one of Tevinter's most cunning generals.
He earned his seconds title not long after. As Zephyrus started getting on in years and his fame steadily increased he couldn't rely on being underestimated anymore. Luckily, the Magister was a real charmer which earned him success beyond most of his fellow senators. After a number of plots that would have made the Antivan noblility proud Zephyrus was given the name Lepidus for him wit and charm. There are many stories about this Magister, although most of them are pure fiction. For instance making the Ander king believe his fool was stealing from him while Zephyrus was the actual thief, or another time when he supposedly seduced the Antivan Queen, coercing her to fund a campaign against the Qunari after a steamy night of passion. To this day Zephyrus has neither confirmed or denied such rumors, he especially likes the one about the Antivan Queen. Unfortunatly for him, he has a way of making enemies faster than he makes friends. There's saying that if each of his enemies gave him a sovereign he'd be able to buy Tevinter with surrounding lands and if his friends came to bury him he'd have to do it himself.
Thus, Zephyrus Arcadius Tarquinus Dercylidas Lepidus is currently one of the most powerful Magisters alive, with no shortage of people looking to change that. As war is brewing in southern Thedas and the Qunari constantly weakening their hold on Seheron, Zephyrus is venturing to the war torn lands to try to salvage something valuable from the rubble. Who knows? Maybe the trouble down south will be a steppingstone for the Imperium's return as the rightful rulers of Thedas.

Zephyrus had a clear memory of one of his elven nannies from his childhood. She used to tell him all manner of folk tales and myths, many of them elven. As soon as his uncle found out he had her thrown into the streets, couldn't have her filling his head with elven superstition. He was reminded of one tale in paricular as he admired the landscape on the Nevarran border. It was a story set during the first blight as Dumat ravaged Thedas.
There was this widow whose husband had died during the wars, no one wanted to venture out to retrieve the body which forced the widow to do it herself. She looked for months, years even, but it was impossible to find her husband's corpse among the fallen soldiers. Impressed by her commitment, Falon'din descended from the heavens. Being one of the People, the Guide of the Dead couldn't take seeing her suffer, so he explained to her that Dumat in all his wickedness had devoured her husband whole and that there was no body to be found. Devastated, the widow fell to her knees but Facon'din helped her up and brought her with him to the afterlife where the widow was finally reunited with her long lost husband. Funny how their gods couldn't help the elves while Zephyrus' people were burning their homes and enslaving every last one of them.
While singing on a tune, the Magister returned to his tent that his slaves had put up on one of the hills. Sitting down in his chair, Zephyrus reached for a grape. As the berry got crushed between his teeth he contemplated his next move. Wether he was going to visit Nevarran or Orlais first was a true conundrum. Making it to the Empire quick was in his best interests but then again he had urgent business in Nevarra as well. The beautiful blood red dawn was clearly a distraction. Maybe an omen of what was to come?
