I think we all seem to be forgetting that there isn't actually a winner's space - more like a winner's time IN space. Which means that as I'm further ahead, I'm still winning.

True, however it is easier to think in terms of an actual winners spot, thus resulting in the recurring metaphor above, however I am now occupying both the metaphorical winner's spot and the winner's place in time at 12:38 local time. Simples.
